Membership of the Royal United Service Institute for Defence and Security Studies in Australia is open to any person who supports the aims of the Institute, and is prepared to abide by its rules. Our members come from diverse backgrounds, but we all share an interest in promoting informed debate on defence and national security, while at the same time expanding our own personal understanding of such matters. We address both current defence affairs and historical perspectives.

To join the RUSI of Tasmania, simply download the form below, print it out, fill it in, then post it to the address thereon with your cheque or money order for the joining fee of $60 ($80 family) (there are no recurring fees). Monthly lectures are held in most centres at discounted rates to members. Featuring renowned speakers from Australian defence and security organisations, universities and "think tanks", these entertaining talks provide the latest information on topics of national importance. Major "International Dialogue" seminars, held every two years, also examine areas of emerging strategic interest.

United Service, our widely-respected journal, is made available to members each quarter. It publishes papers presented at Institute meetings and seminars, along with other contributed papers dealing with defence and security issues and military history. Relevant news items, opinion pieces, letters to the editor, book reviews and biographical articles round out a colourful, informative and entertaining package.

The Institute's websites provide members with current event information, updates on defence affairs, access to the library catalogue and book reviews, and searchable digital versions of our journal articles, articles are all free for members to download.

A treasure-trove featuring thousands of volumes, our Institute Libraries rank with of the top military history and defence collections in Australia. Members have access to books (including some extremely rare items), documents, maps and contemporary journals that will please everyone from the casual militaria enthusiast to the serious academic researcher. The collections can be searched conveniently via our online catalogues.

Members are invited to join our regular fully-guided "insider" tours of defence bases and sites of historical significance.

These visits always prove to be deeply informative while also being relaxing and enjoyable.

The financial contributions of members are very much appreciated in supporting the ongoing public achievements of our Institute. These include:

  • Our preservation of invaluable historical sources
  • Our support of the defence and security debate (through the provision of stimulating and independent information to the community)
  • Our preparation of formal submissions advising government on defence and security matters

Members enjoy regular opportunities to meet and converse with other members from diverse and intriguing backgrounds. We also stage annual commemorative and social gatherings, often in evocative historical settings, where our spirit of camaraderie and our rich heritage is celebrated.
